Workshop Promotes Eco-Friendly Craft from Water Hyacinth

KOKRAJHAR, Feb 18: A one-day district-level workshop on “Making Utility Items from Water Hyacinth” was successfully held at PM Shri Kokrajhar Girls HS School under the Environment Education Programme (EEP), an initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, implemented by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati.
The programme was inaugurated by Biju Basumatary, District Programme Officer, SSA. Dr. Sanjib Brahma, Vice Principal of Science College, Kokrajhar, conducted the theoretical session as the resource person. Explaining the aims and objectives of the initiative, District Coordinator of EEP, Mr. Chakramani Brahma, emphasized the importance of sustainable practices.
The practical sessions were led by four experienced trainers—Monendra Koch, Demonstrator, Tipkai HS School; Kabita Nath Basumatary, Assistant Teacher, Kokrajhar Girls HS School; Ganapati Brahma, Assistant Teacher, PM Shri Dotma HS School; and Jwngsar Jwhwlao Basumatary, Block Coordinator, ASC, Gossaigaon. Participants were trained to prepare useful items from water hyacinth, promoting eco-friendly alternatives and creative skill development.
During the valedictory session, EEP handbooks for school eco clubs and participation certificates were distributed. A total of 80 teachers from 40 schools took part in the event. The workshop concluded with wide appreciation from attendees, highlighting the significance of skill-based, environmentally conscious initiatives for sustainable resource utilization.
