Former Haflong MLA demands probe after Haflong Government College students stage sit‑in over alleged exam anomalies

Haflong, June 9: Former MLA and ex‑Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Samarjit Haflongbar strongly criticised Assam University, Silchar, following a sit‑in protest by students of Haflong Government College over alleged irregularities in recent semester examinations.
In a press statement, Haflongbar described the situation as “deeply concerning,” saying the reported lapses amount to “serious negligence” that could harm the academic futures and careers of innocent students, particularly those from Sixth Schedule areas. He urged Assam University to launch a thorough inquiry and take appropriate disciplinary action against anyone found responsible, and demanded that the students’ grievances be addressed without delay.
The protest by students, who have been seeking clarity and resolution over pending results and perceived anomalies in the conduct and evaluation of semester papers, has raised broader questions about the quality and accessibility of higher education in Assam’s remote hill districts. Local leaders and families have expressed fears that repeated administrative and examination failures will disproportionately affect students from tribal and hill communities.
Haflongbar also appealed to the “Triple Engine Government” — the Autonomous Council, the State Government and the Union Government — to expedite plans for a separate campus of Assam University in Haflong, on the lines of the existing Diphu campus in Karbi Anglong. He said a local campus would strengthen higher‑education infrastructure in the district and help minimise administrative and examination‑related problems in future.
