: In a significant initiative towards providing better residential and educational facilities to tribal students, the Assam government has undertaken a major step on the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Pakhwada. On Monday, State Minister for Tribal Affairs (Plain Areas), Dr. Ranoj Pegu, laid the foundation stones for the construction of two tribal hostels at two reputed educational institutions in the Morigaon Assembly constituency in the presence of local MLA Ramakanta Deuri.,
The hostels, to be constructed under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, will come up on the premises of Morigaon Girls’ Higher Secondary School and Morigaon Town Higher Secondary School. An amount of Rs. 2.51 crore has been earmarked for each hostel under the Department of Tribal Affairs (Plain Areas). The total expenditure on the two projects will be Rs. 5.02 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Dr. Pegu said that the construction of these hostels would provide safe, convenient and improved residential facilities to students belonging to tribal communities. The facilities would particularly benefit students who have to stay away from their homes to pursue their education. He added that better residential infrastructure would make their educational journey easier and encourage greater participation in the field of education.
Target to Benefit Over Five Crore Tribal People in Five Years
It may be mentioned that the Central Government launched the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan on October 2, 2024. The ambitious programme aims to bridge infrastructure gaps in tribal-majority villages across the country and strengthen facilities related to education, healthcare, nutrition, drinking water, housing and livelihood opportunities.
A total of 63,843 villages across 549 districts and 2,911 blocks in 30 States and Union Territories have been brought under the ambit of the programme. The initiative aims to benefit more than five crore tribal people over a period of five years. As many as 25 schemes and interventions are being implemented under the programme in collaboration with 17 Central Ministries. Construction of hostels is also an important component of the initiative to improve access to education for tribal students.
In Assam too, priority is being accorded to the construction of hostels for tribal students under the programme. The foundation-laying ceremony for the two new hostels in Morigaon marks an important step in this direction. Timely completion of the projects will now be crucial to ensure that local tribal students can avail themselves of these facilities at the earliest.
