Hills Live News Desk
Haflong, March 20 – Daniel Langthasa, a prominent political figure from Dima Hasao, formally submitted his nomination papers on Friday as the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for the 113 Haflong (ST) constituency. Even though there was rain at Haflong, the event drew a large gathering of supporters, underscoring his growing influence in the region.
Born on November 29, 1983, Langthasa’s journey reflects a blend of academic excellence and grassroots activism. After completing his schooling at Don Bosco School and higher studies at Cotton College and Assam Engineering College, he transitioned from engineering into politics, driven by a commitment to indigenous rights and transparent governance.
Langthasa’s political career began with the Congress, where he served as Secretary of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress and General Secretary of the Dima Hasao District Congress Committee. In 2019, he won a seat in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), where he advocated for land protection, Sixth Schedule autonomy, and anti-corruption measures.
However, in 2022, disillusioned with national priorities overshadowing regional concerns, Langthasa resigned from Congress. On February 12, 2026, he joined the NPP as Chief Coordinator for Dima Hasao, aligning himself with the “One Northeast” vision led by leaders such as Conrad K. Sangma and Pradyot Manikya Debbarma. He also serves as Convenor of the Sixth Schedule Protection Committee, pushing for reforms to safeguard tribal lands and resources.
Beyond politics, Langthasa is known for his cultural engagement. Married to Avantika Haflongbar, a cultural entrepreneur, he has performed at festivals across India as a musician, blending art with messages of unity. His strong social media presence, with over 300,000 followers, has made him a popular figure among youth.
At 42, Daniel Langthasa positions himself as both a son of Haflong and a bridge-builder for the Northeast, combining traditional roots with modern political vision. His candidacy is seen as a significant development in the region’s evolving political landscape.
