Hills Live News, Morigaon, October 29:
The Zubeen Garg Justice Struggle Committee has raised serious allegations that the charge sheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the state government to investigate the alleged murder of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, has loopholes so significant that even the principal accused could escape the clutches of the law.
Addressing a press conference in Morigaon on Wednesday, the newly formed organisation’s president, Anuj Kumar Baisya, secretary Dimbeswar Das, and other office-bearers described the successive granting of bail to the accused in the case as extremely unfortunate.
The committee announced that it would soon approach the Supreme Court to challenge the bail granted to the accused. It also demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case and called for members of the Assamese community living abroad to be brought within the scope of the investigation.
Seeking public support to meet the substantial legal expenses involved in pursuing the case, the committee appealed to Zubeen Garg’s fans, admirers and well-wishers to extend financial assistance.
The organisation stated that, in the interest of transparency and accountability, it had opened an account with the Morigaon branch of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank to receive cashless contributions.
The account details are as follows:
Account Number: 7273050014757
Bank: Assam Gramin Vikash Bank, Morigaon Branch
IFSC Code: PUNBORRBAGB
Interested individuals have been requested to contribute financial assistance to support the committee’s legal efforts to secure justice for the late singer.
Advocate Ratul Bora of Morigaon, the first person to lodge an FIR in connection with the Zubeen Garg case, was also present at the press conference. He described it as a matter of concern and suspicion that several FIR informants and complainant witnesses had not been brought within the scope of the evidence-recording process in the case currently being heard by the Fast Track Court in Guwahati.
The committee’s office-bearers reiterated their determination to continue their relentless struggle to secure justice for Zubeen Garg, whose death has deeply affected people across Assam.
The Zubeen Garg Justice Struggle Committee was formed on October 23. Apart from President Anuj Kumar Baisya and Secretary Dimbeswar Das, Bipul Chandra Medhi has been appointed vice-president, while Atul Chandra Bora has been named treasurer. Panchanan Saikia, Imran Hussain Choudhury, Hridayananda Deka and Pawan Bora have been appointed as members.
The committee’s advisers include retired Superintendent of Police Bhupendranath Hazarika, senior advocate Aminul Haque and RTI activist Okaram Prasant Singh.
