Hills Live News, Morigaon, October 14:
The Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a protest in Morigaon demanding the resignation and removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations that the names of crores of eligible voters had been illegally deleted from the country’s electoral rolls.
The protest was organised by the Morigaon District Council of the CPI in front of its district office today.
The sit-in was part of a statewide protest launched in response to a call by the CPI National Council and a decision of its Assam State Council.
Participating in the protest, CPI leaders alleged that the Election Commission had illegally removed the names of crores of eligible voters from the electoral rolls. They claimed that fellow Election Commissioners had also raised objections to the matter and had already sent letters in this regard, with the issue subsequently reported in the national media.
The leaders further stated that opposition political parties, student and youth organisations, and farmers’ groups had been conducting sustained protests across the country, including in the national capital, New Delhi, demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
The CPI leaders asserted that despite their limited numbers, they would continue their struggle against what they described as unethical practices and corruption. They warned that the protest movement would continue until the Chief Election Commissioner resigned.
Among those who participated in the protest were CPI Morigaon District Council secretary Navajyoti Tamuli, joint secretary Dambaru Das, executive member Pradip Deka, and several other office-bearers and party workers. The protesters carried party flags and banners during the demonstration.
