Silchar May 30: The High Court Bench Demand Implementation Committee, Cachar District Committee, organized an awareness meeting and mass signature campaign at Sri Sri Kachakanti Vidyamandir, Udharbond, on Saturday to strengthen the demand for a permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court in Barak Valley.
The programme witnessed participation from lawyers, academicians, political leaders, social activists, students, and members of the public. Addressing the gathering, Udharbond MLA Rajdeep Goala extended full support to the demand, describing it as legitimate and necessary for ensuring easier access to justice for the people of Barak Valley.
Speakers highlighted the difficulties faced by nearly four million residents who must travel to Guwahati for High Court matters, causing financial and logistical hardships. Advocate Dharmananda Dev presented a detailed overview of the region’s judicial history and argued that Barak Valley’s population, geographical location, and growing litigation justify the establishment of a permanent High Court Bench.
Following the meeting, a mass signature campaign was held at the premises of Sri Sri Kachakanti Temple, drawing an overwhelming response from students, professionals, traders, women, youth, and senior citizens. According to organizers, more than 500 people signed the memorandum supporting the demand.
The committee announced that awareness programmes will continue across Barak Valley, with the next meeting scheduled for June 6 at Badarpur N.C. College. Organizers expressed confidence that sustained public support and collective efforts would help achieve the long-standing demand for a permanent Gauhati High Court Bench in the region.
