Haflong, April 25: The 101st birth anniversary of Nityalal Daulagupu, founder secretary of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) and a pioneer in strengthening the institution, was observed with deep reverence in Haflong on Saturday.

Organized by Daulagupu Hosom in collaboration with the Dima Hasao District Sports Association (DHDASA), the program began with floral tributes at Daulagupu’s statue at the entrance of the N.L. Daulagupu Sports Complex.

A well-attended commemorative meeting followed at the DHDASA Hall, where dignitaries highlighted Daulagupu’s enduring legacy, vision, and contributions to society.

Speaking to the media, Kulendra Daulagupu, a member of Daulagupu Hosom, shared insights into the late N.L. Daulagupu’s life and his pivotal role in shaping Dima Hasao district.

Notably, Daulagupu served as founder secretary of the NC Hills Autonomous Council, providing the basic framework for the District Council and its code. He also spearheaded the construction of the Cultural Institute Hall in Haflong, initially managed by a committee he secretary-led, before its takeover by NCHAC in 1987.

Additionally, he founded the district’s first college—Haflong Government College—in 1961 as a night college run by a committee under his secretaryship. It was taken over by the Assam government in 1975 and upgraded to a full-fledged institution.
