Fierce contests take shape in duo hills districts of Assam

Diphu March 23:  The nomination process for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections concluded on today evening (Monday) several parties’ candidates submitted nomination papers across the five assembly constituencies in the Karbi Anglong Election District.

These Scheduled Tribe (ST)-reserved seats are gearing up for intense challenge, particularly in key battlegrounds where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces challenges from the Congress- All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) alliance.

In 108-Bokajan LAC, several political parties candidates filed nominations. The spotlight is on a direct contest between BJP’s Surjya Rongphar and the Congress-APHLC alliance candidate Raton Engti.

109-Howraghat LAC witnessing presence of key candidates submitting nomination papers, here, BJP’s Lunsing Teron will take on Sanjeeb Teron of the Congress alliance in what promises to be an aggressive battle.

In 110-Diphu LAC, key opposition candidates filed nominations. Voters can expect a closely fought clash between BJP’s Smt. Niso Terangpi and the alliance candidate, APHLC president J.I. Kathar.

Shifting to West Karbi Anglong, the 111-Rongkhang LAC recorded several key candidates filing nomination papers. BJP’s candidate, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, faces Congress’s Augustine Enghee.

This seat is considered relatively safe for the BJP based on recent trends and local assessments.

Finally, 112-Amri LAC had key faces submitting nomination papers, setting up a direct fight between BJP’s Dr. Habe Teron and APHLC’s Bikram Hanse.

The Assam Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, 2026, in a single phase, with vote counting on May 4. Nomination scrutiny is set for March 24 (Tuesday) and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is March 26 (Thursday).

These developments mark the formal start of campaigning in the hill districts, where development, sixth scheduled autonomy issues, and local leadership are expected to dominate the narrative.

The BJP has expressed confidence in sweeping the region, while the opposition alliance aims to consolidate anti-BJP votes in key pockets.
