DSU submits memo to Dima Hasao District Commissioner Over Dilapidated NH-27 and Leaking Nrimbanglao Tunnel
Hills Live News, Haflong, Sept 8— The Dimasa Students’ Union (DSU) Central Committee submitted a formal memorandum to Gayatri Devidas Hyalinge (IAS), District Commissioner of Dima Hasao on Tuesday, demanding immediate repair and restoration of the National Highway-27 (East–West Corridor).
The submission highlights severe safety concerns regarding the highway stretch from Ardaopur-Hatikhali to Nrimbanglao-Mahur, as well as critical infrastructure issues inside the Nrimbanglao Tunnel.
The memorandum, signed by DSU President Sidut Naiding and General Secretary Pramith Sengyung, stresses that NH-27 serves as a vital lifeline for students, patients, traders, and emergency services in the district.
According to the union, severe pothole proliferation, uneven road surfaces, and persistent water accumulation during rain fall have led to frequent traffic congestion, vehicle damage, and heightened accident risks.
Furthermore, the union highlighted critical safety hazards caused by persistent water leakage inside the Nrimbanglao Tunnel. Water flowing directly onto the roadway creates dangerous conditions for commuters and threatens to accelerate structural deterioration of the tunnel.
Key Demands Submitted by DSU:
Complete Road Resurfacing: Immediate repair and proper re-carpeting of the Ardaopur-Hatikhali to Nrimbanglao-Mahur stretch, rejecting temporary or substandard patchwork.
Tunnel Leakage Rectification: Thorough technical assessment and permanent sealing of water seepage inside the Nrimbanglao Tunnel, along with overhaul of the internal drainage system.
Drainage & Safety Infrastructure:
Implementation of functional highway drainage systems, alongside adequate safety installations including warning signage, reflectors, and proper lighting at vulnerable spots.
Action Report & Monitoring: Issuance of a clear written action report and strict oversight by the District Administration.
The student body has issued a 10-day deadline for authorities and the National Highways to initiate necessary repairs. DSU leadership warned that failure to adhere to the timeline will force the organization to launch democratic and constitutional protest measures in the interest of public safety.
Copies of the memorandum were also dispatched to the NHIDCL Regional Office, the Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao, and the Project Director of NH-27.
