Hills Live News, Guwahati, August 31: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) staged intense statewide protests today, condemning the conspiratorial registration of an FIR by the BJP government against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who had demanded stern action against BJP–RSS workers for carrying out a caste-based ‘purification’ ritual at the venue addressed by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Following the directives of APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, vibrant demonstrations were organized across all district headquarters of Assam, as well as at the party’s state headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, opposing the BJP regime’s political vendetta and blatant misuse of state machinery.
Moderated by Bedabrat Bora, Chairman of the APCC Media and Communication Department, the protest witnessed the active participation of numerous senior leaders and legislators. Prominent attendees included Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Leader Wazed Ali Choudhury, former APCC President Ripun Bora, MLAs Aftab Uddin Mollah, Mohibur Rahman, Aminur Rashid Choudhury, and Nurul Islam, APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah, General Secretary Shantanu Bora, senior Congress leader and former minister Nilamani Sen Deka, former MLA Aminul Islam, Guwahati City District Congress President Swapan Das, Kamrup District Congress President Pranjit Choudhury, along with office-bearers and workers of the Pradesh Congress and Kamrup (Metro) District Congress.
Addressing the gathering, former APCC President Ripun Bora launched a scathing attack on the anti-democratic policies of the BJP party and government. He stated that following the massive success of Mallikarjun Kharge’s public rally, BJP and RSS workers sent a toxic, divisive message of caste discrimination across the country under the guise of ‘purifying’ the ground. However, when Rahul Gandhi stood firm to defend the nation’s Constitution and democracy by demanding legal action against the perpetrators, the BJP-led Uttarakhand government retaliated with a fraudulent, politically motivated FIR against him instead. Bora asserted that despite slapping multiple fabricated cases since 2014, the BJP has utterly failed to intimidate or silence Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress will relentlessly fight to preserve and protect the Constitution of India.
Throughout the demonstration, party leaders and workers made the entire Rajiv Bhawan premises reverberate with slogans targeting the BJP’s autocratic governance and divisive agenda. Protesters raised slogans including “Withdraw false cases against Rahul Gandhi,” “Stop BJP’s communal politics,” “Caste discrimination will not be tolerated in India,” “Protect Indian Democracy,” “Long live the Indian Constitution,” “Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao,” and “BJP Government Hai Hai,” demanding the unconditional and immediate withdrawal of the fabricated FIR.
