BPF Chief Denies Finalisation of NDA Seat-Sharing Formula
Tribal Voice News
KOKRAJHAR, March 1: BPF supremo BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary on Sunday dismissed speculation regarding the circulation of “final” seat-sharing numbers within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), asserting that no decision has been taken so far.
Speaking on the sidelines of a massive rally organised today by the BPF at Janagaon Field, Titaguri in Kokrajhar, Mohilary clarified that discussions among alliance partners were still underway. “There are multiple parties in the NDA alliance – the BJP, AGP, UPPL and others. The number of seats for each party has not been finalised yet. The figures being circulated are inaccurate,” he said.
Mohilary reiterated that the BJP leads the NDA just as the Congress heads the UPA and therefore the BPF could only speak about its own preparations. “We will discuss seats based on our party’s capacity,” he added.
On reports of possible defections from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), the BPF chief said talks were ongoing. “I cannot say today who will join. Before the Model Code of Conduct comes into force, we will welcome those who wish to join the BPF,” he remarked.
Turning to development issues, Mohilary highlighted several pending projects in the BTC region including flyovers at Debargaon, Titaguri, Tniali and Gossaigaon, the Sankosh Bridge, the Bekee River bridge and the Indo-Bhutan National Highway. He expressed hope for positive announcements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kokrajhar and Assam on March 13.
He also drew attention to delays at Rupsi Airport, stating that runway-related issues had stalled construction midway. “An extension period is required and the Assam Chief Minister will take the lead in resolving the matter,” he said. Welcoming the recent MoU between the Assam government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for a new international airport at Manas, Mohilary termed it “good news for the region.”
The rally, attended by hundreds of party workers and supporters, was projected as a show of strength ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. Mohilary further noted the success of the party’s Peace Mission Jatra in Kokrajhar district, which saw participation from diverse communities including Rajbongshi, Nath-Yogi, Garo, Rabha, Bengali and Hindi-speaking groups.
The BPF’s grand mass rally cum public meeting, organised by the Kokrajhar district committee was attended by district president Derhasat Basumatary, former minister Pramila Rani Brahma, top leaders, EMs and MCLAs.
