Governor Shri Acharya felicitates Assam’s senior-most retired primary teacher on Teachers’ Day

Lok Bhavan honours 148 senior-most retired elementary education teachers
under Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman Yojana on the occasion

Hills Live News, Guwahati, Sept 5: In a fitting tribute to his life-long dedication to teaching,
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on the occasion of Teachers’ Day,
felicitated 95-year-old Prafulla Kumar Borthakur, the senior-most retired primary
school teacher of Assam, at a programme held at his residence in Jamugurihat today.
The felicitation was part of the ‘Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman’
initiative, under which the Governor had directed all District Commissioners to
honour the oldest retired primary school teacher in their respective districts on the
occasion of Teachers’ Day in recognition of their life- long service to the cause of
education.
Sharing his views on the occasion, Governor Acharya highlighted the
invaluable contribution of teachers in shaping generations and strengthening the
intellectual and social fabric of the nation. He said that respecting and honouring
teachers has always been an integral part of India’s rich heritage and tradition.
Referring to Prafulla Kumar Borthakur’s long journey as an educator, the
Governor said that he had witnessed the transformation of several generations and that
the values, knowledge and confidence imparted by him have left an enduring
impression on the lives of his students. “This is the greatest legacy of a teacher,” he
remarked.
The Governor said that as Assam and the nation move towards the vision of
‘Viksit Bharat’, teachers have a vital role to play in nurturing knowledgeable,
responsible, compassionate and socially conscious citizens. He emphasised that
quality education and the holistic development of students must remain the foremost
priority of the teaching community.
He also lauded the teachers for their dedicated contribution to various public
initiatives and responsibilities, even as they continue to discharge their primary duty
of shaping and educating future generations. He said that the knowledge, values and
aspirations nurtured in classrooms today would lay the foundation for a developed,
empowered and self-reliant Assam of tomorrow.
It may be noted that Shri Borthakur was felicitated with a citation, phulam
gamosa, shawl, Xorai, Japi, fruit basket, umbrella and a cheque for ₹51,000 in the

programme, which was also attended by Ranjit Dutta, MP, Sonitpur, Padma
Hazarika, MLA, Naduar, Ritu Barman Sharma, MLA, Borcholla, Ananda
Das, District Commissioner, Sonitpur and other prominent citizens.
Similar felicitation programmes were simultaneously organised across the state
at the district and elementary education block levels to felicitate senior-most retired
elementary education teachers.
At the district level, a total of 35 senior-most retired primary teachers were
felicitated at their respective homes, while at the Elementary Education Block level,
113 retired teachers received honours from the respective Block Elementary
Education Officers (BEEOs). The teachers were felicitated with a gamosa, fruit basket
and citation from the Governor.
In all the field-level felicitations, senior government representatives made
personal visits to the homes of the teachers and offered their felicitations,
underscoring the state’s respect and commitment to the teaching community.
