Hills Live News, Morigaon. September 22: The Congress party has intensified its campaign for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency by-election. In line with this, a massive workers’ meeting was held today under the aegis of the Laharighat Block Congress Committee at the Kathani Secondary School playground in Laharighat, Morigaon district. Aimed at further strengthening the party’s grassroots base ahead of the by-election, the gathering was attended by several senior leaders, including AICC In-charge of Assam Bhupesh Baghel, APCC President and MP Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Wazed Ali Choudhury, AICC Secretaries Manoj Chauhan and Prithviraj Sathe, MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, local MLA Dr. Asif Nazar, and Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora.

Addressing the meeting first, former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and AICC General Secretary in-charge of Assam, Bhupesh Baghel, launched a scathing attack on the BJP government. Baghel remarked that the eyes of the entire country are on the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. Highlighting the failures of both the Central and state governments, he said, “On one hand, prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas, sugar, and edible oil have been hiked relentlessly; on the other hand, unemployed youth study hard throughout the year only to have question papers leaked and examinations canceled. A reign of outright plunder prevails across the country today.” Criticizing the double-engine dispensation, he noted that during the devastating floods in Assam, the double-engine government failed completely, leaving the affected public without adequate relief or assistance. Instead, Assam is being plundered from both ends—handing over coal, sand, and valuable lands to Adani—with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acting merely as a representative of these looters. Referring to the recent attack on the Congress convoy in Samaguri, Baghel asserted, “The attack on our convoy yesterday was nothing but a manifestation of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s panic. They have already conceded defeat and are desperately trying to intimidate us into retreating indoors. But Himanta Biswa Sarma should know that we are not people who can be frightened. We are made of the soil that drove the British colonialists out of this nation. What standing do the BJP and RSS hold before us? We will not fear; we will fight and we will win.” Recalling the 1.20 lakh vote lead secured from Laharighat in the previous election, Baghel declared, “This time, Sibamoni Bora must be made victorious from the Laharighat segment by a margin of at least 1.5 lakh votes.”

Speaking next, APCC President and MP Gaurav Gogoi recalled his deep emotional ties with Laharighat. He said, “Standing before you today, I do not feel like delivering a routine political speech; my thoughts turn to the former minister of this constituency, the late Dr. Nazrul Islam, and my father, the late Tarun Gogoi.” Emphasizing that as long as these two leaders were active, an atmosphere of complete security, harmony, and peace prevailed among the minority communities, he commended Dr. Nazrul Islam’s son, MLA Dr. Asif Nazar, for carrying forward that legacy with steadfast commitment. Accusing the BJP of intimidating and enticing Congress workers and panchayat representatives, Gogoi stated that today’s massive gathering had decimated all such sinister attempts. Targeting the BJP candidate, he remarked, “The BJP candidate is merely an agent of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s communal eviction politics. Like an elephant with two sets of teeth—one for display and another for chewing—that is the true strategy of the BJP.” He further criticized the Chief Minister, noting that ever since Himanta Biswa Sarma entered the BJP, dedicated legacy workers were sidelined while syndicates dealing in cattle, sand, stone, coal, and broilers gained free rein. He added, “There is no power in their stones; the real power lies in the vote cast by your fingers.” Taking a sharp dig at the covert understanding between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Badruddin Ajmal, Gogoi quipped, “Just as people dial 108 for an ambulance when someone falls sick, whenever Himanta Biswa Sarma falls politically ill, he dials 108 and phones Maulana Badruddin Ajmal.” He reminded the gathering that Congress has consistently stood by the public in times of trial—introducing photo-affixed voter identity cards, fighting in the Supreme Court for women’s panchayat linkage certificates during the NRC process, and establishing legal aid camps for D-voters. He appealed to the electorate to ensure a resounding victory for the Congress in Nagaon to strengthen the hands of Rahul Gandhi, who is taking on Narendra Modi in Parliament.
