Guwahati, September 26: A new chapter has been opened in Assam’s healthcare sector with the introduction of advanced medical technology. For the first time, complex cardiac surgeries using robotic technology have been successfully performed at the CN Centre of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Three patients underwent successful robotic cardiac surgery over two days, on September 25 and 26, creating new possibilities for advanced cardiac care for patients in the state.
The surgeries were performed by the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the CN Centre of GMCH under the supervision of renowned cardiac surgeon and Assam’s first robotic cardiac surgery specialist, Dr. Ritwik Raj Bhuyan. The successful completion of complex cardiac surgeries using robotic technology within the state is being regarded as a significant advancement in Assam’s healthcare system.
On this occasion, a cardiac robotic surgery workshop was organised at the CN Centre from September 25 to 26. Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal, who attended the workshop, highlighted the importance of introducing advanced technology into the state’s healthcare sector.
Health Minister Ashok Singhal said that the government has been according special attention to making Assam’s healthcare system modern and stronger. One of the government’s key objectives is to provide advanced medical treatment to the people of the state within Assam itself through the use of cutting-edge technology. He described the introduction of robotic cardiac surgery at GMCH as an important step in this direction.
The Minister further said that, keeping pace with the rapid developments in medical science, advanced technologies need to be introduced into the state’s medical institutions as well. The combination of such technologies with the knowledge and expertise of specialist doctors would create new opportunities for providing improved healthcare services to patients in Assam. He expressed hope that this progress in the state’s healthcare sector would open up new possibilities in various other areas of complex medical treatment in the future.
During the workshop, Dr. Ritwik Raj Bhuyan, a renowned cardiac surgeon and Assam’s first robotic cardiac surgery specialist, provided training to cardiothoracic surgeons and doctors of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on various aspects of robotic surgery. The workshop familiarised doctors with the use of robotic technology, surgical techniques and different aspects of modern cardiac surgery.
Dr. Ritwik Raj Bhuyan was accompanied at the workshop by Director of Medical Education Dr. Manoj Kumar Choudhury, Principal of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, Superintendent Dr. Debajit Choudhury, along with several other doctors and healthcare personnel.
It may be mentioned that Dr. Ritwik Raj Bhuyan has been serving as a cardiac surgeon for the past 27 years at several leading hospitals in Australia, Manchester in the United Kingdom and Delhi, among other places. He is currently serving as Director of Adult Cardiac Surgery at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Okhla, New Delhi.
