NFR to Restore Line No. 2 at New Harangajao by September 5

Haflong, September 1: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making rapid progress in the restoration of railway infrastructure at New Harangajao station, with Line No. 2 expected to be restored by September 5, 2026.
Around 500 personnel are working round the clock at the site to expedite the restoration work and facilitate the resumption of normal train operations. As part of the massive restoration effort, NFR has deployed 22 PC excavators, 12 JCBs, 18 tractors and specialised equipment, including pneumatic drills and hydraulic piling rigs.
The New Harangajao yard has been affected by continuous settlement and lateral shifting of the railway formation since July 20, disrupting normal train operations. As a precautionary measure, train movement has been restricted to Line No. 3 to ensure passenger safety.
According to NFR, the problem has been caused by a shift in the natural watercourse and changes in the local drainage pattern, resulting in heavy and concentrated water inflow from the upstream hillside. The accumulation of water beneath the ground has led to deep sub-surface water build-up, affecting the stability of the railway formation.
NFR has undertaken extensive measures, including drainage management, dewatering and strengthening of the affected formation, to restore the lines at the earliest.
At present, trains are operating through Line No. 3 under enhanced safety measures. The restoration of Line No. 2 by September 5 is expected to allow NFR to operate additional trains through the affected section. Line No. 1 is expected to be restored by the end of September.
NFR said all necessary manpower, machinery and other resources are being deployed to expedite the restoration work, with passenger safety remaining its foremost priority.
The restoration is expected to improve train movement through the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section, which has faced prolonged operational restrictions following the ground settlement at New Harangajao.
