Assam rail network achieves 100% electrification

Haflong, September 14: Assam has achieved 100 per cent electrification of its railway network with the completion of electrification work on the 169-km Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on X on Sunday.

The electrification of the Lumding-Badarpur section marks the completion of Assam’s railway electrification programme. The stretch, passing through the mountainous terrain of Dima Hasao, is considered one of the most challenging railway sections in the Northeast, with numerous tunnels, bridges and sharp gradients.

The completion of the project is expected to improve train operations by reducing dependence on diesel traction, enhancing operational efficiency and enabling more environment-friendly and potentially faster services along the hill section.

The development assumes particular significance for Dima Hasao and southern Assam, as the Lumding-Badarpur route is a crucial rail link connecting the Barak Valley with the rest of Assam and the Northeast.

The achievement is being seen as a major step towards modernising railway infrastructure in the region and strengthening rail connectivity across the state, particularly in the strategically important hill and border areas of southern Assam.
