RSS ORGANISES ‘PRAMUKH NAGARIK SAMMELAN’ IN GUWAHATI

Guwahati, September 13: The Triveni Bhag of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Guwahati Mahanagar, organised a “Pramukh Nagarik Sammelan” at Sudarshanlaya, Barbari, Guwahati, as part of the organisation’s centenary-year celebrations.
The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the distinguished guests. This was followed by a Borgeet performance by Sri Krishna Goswami and his associates, while Sri Hemang Kalita presented a patriotic solo song.
Addressing the gathering, RSS Uttar Assam Prant Sanghchalak Dr. Bhupesh Chandra Sharma highlighted the organisation’s 100-year journey, describing it as one marked by various challenges, social changes and significant organisational achievements.
He also spoke about the grassroots activities undertaken by the RSS to create awareness in villages across different parts of the country about Indian culture, traditions, social responsibility and the role of the organisation.
Dr. Sharma elaborately discussed the life and ideals of RSS founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Referring to the historical circumstances during British rule, he spoke about the social disorder perceived by Hedgewar at the time and the need to organise and unite society.
He said that these ideas led to the establishment of the RSS in 1925 and the introduction of the shakha system with the objective of associating the youth with discipline, social responsibility and cultural awareness.
Dr. Sharma also recalled various challenging phases in the history of the RSS, particularly the ban imposed on the organisation following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and the situation during the Emergency in 1975. He emphasised the importance of continuing social activities at the grassroots level even during such difficult periods.
Speaking on the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, Dr. Sharma referred to India’s civilisation, heritage, cultural values and spiritual traditions. He urged citizens to remain connected with the country’s cultural values and make positive contributions to society.
He also stressed the need to strengthen family relationships and values. Expressing concern over declining communication between parents and children, the growing influence of individualistic and self-centred lifestyles within families, and weakening bonds between elders and children and grandchildren, he urged families to introduce children to the Ramayana and other traditional sources of knowledge.
According to Dr. Sharma, the Ramayana contains important lessons on family love, brotherly relationships, a mother’s affection, respect, duty and social values.
He also expressed concern over increasing violence in society, crimes against women and children, drug abuse and the erosion of social values. Referring to a recent brutal murder in Guwahati, he stressed the need for society to introspect on the underlying causes of such incidents and to build stronger family and social relationships.
Dr. Sharma further raised concerns over deforestation, plastic pollution, artificial flooding and the destruction of natural habitats and their impact on birds and animals. He referred to initiatives undertaken by the RSS under its “Panch Parivartan” programme.
He appealed to citizens to reduce the use of plastic, undertake tree plantation and adopt environment-friendly traditional products such as banana leaves and linen bags.
Dr. Sharma also spoke about constitutional and fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and religious freedom.
Concluding his address, he highlighted the importance of “Swadeshi” and encouraged citizens to show greater respect and support for indigenous products. According to him, adopting Swadeshi products is not merely a symbol of self-reliance but also an expression of responsibility towards the nation and national consciousness.
Overall, the convention highlighted social harmony, family values, cultural awareness, environmental conservation, responsible citizenship and the promotion of Swadeshi as key themes reflecting on the RSS’s centenary journey.
More than 200 people attended the programme. Guwahati Mahanagar Sah-Sanghchalak Rukma Prasad Bhuyan was also present on the occasion..
