Manbar Nath Martyrdom Day Observed in Morigaon

The Morigaon District Yogi Sammilani, in association with its Boribandha Regional Committee, observed the Martyr Manbar Nath Memorial Day, commemorating the 1942 martyr, with a day-long programme at the premises of Jamuguri Namghar today.
On the occasion, a ceremonial lamp was lit at the memorial site in the morning by Ramen Nath, president of the Morigaon District Yogi Sammilani. This was followed by a memorial meeting in remembrance of martyr Manbar Nath. The meeting was conducted by Nareshwar Nath, secretary of the regional committee, and presided over by Durlabh Nath.
Addressing the gathering as a distinguished guest, former president of the Morigaon District Students’ Union, Dipul Kumar Nath, said that during the Quit India movement of 1942, martyr Manbar Nath had emerged as an active leader of the “Mrityu Bahini” (Death Squad) formed by freedom fighters in the Dhekiajuli area of Sonitpur district of Assam.
He said that on September 20, 1942, freedom fighters and local people in Dhekiajuli, like people in various other parts of Assam, had resolved to lower the British Union Jack at the local police station and hoist the Indian Tricolour in its place.
On that day, Manbar Nath was at the forefront of the procession that proceeded towards the Dhekiajuli police station to hoist the national flag. British police opened fire to stop the procession. Manbar Nath was killed on the spot in the British police firing.
Dipul Kumar Nath said that whenever the motherland Assam or India had faced a crisis, the Nath-Yogi community has never hesitated to make sacrifices..
