Hills LIve News, Morigaon, September 20: The BJP government in Assam, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is a failed government being run on loans and debt, and as a result, the state has been unable to make progress over the past five months, former MP and senior Congress leader Abdul Khaleque said today.
Addressing a press conference as part of Nagaon Lok sabha by poll held at Khiroda Bhawan, the Morigaon District Congress office, Khaleque alleged that the BJP government has not only ignored the interests of the minority community but has also failed to consider the sentiments and development needs of the tribal communities.
Referring to the demand for an AIIMS hospital at Raha in Nagaon district, he said the people of the Raha constituency had launched a strong agitation demanding the establishment of AIIMS there. However, he alleged that the people of Raha subsequently failed to even secure a high-quality hospital.
Regarding the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, Khaleque termed it a “premature election.” He alleged that Pradyut Bordoloi had betrayed the hopes and aspirations of the people of the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency by joining the BJP, which he described as a communal party. He further said that despite the sacrifice involved, Bordoloi subsequently failed to secure a ministerial position.
Khaleque also launched a sharp attack on BJP candidate Debashish Sharma in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. He alleged that during his tenure as Deputy Commissioner of Morigaon and Nagaon districts, Sharma had worked as an agent of the BJP. Khaleque further alleged that Sharma had violated the Constitution of India and attempted to portray Indian men and women as Bangladeshis and push them across the border.
He also alleged that Sharma was now attempting to appeal to minority voters by addressing gatherings with expressions such as “Insha Allah” and “Masha Allah,” which Khaleque described as political acting for electoral gains.
Khaleque further alleged that Debashish Sharma and Maulana Badruddin Ajmal were individuals being operated through the “remote control” of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that although Modi had visited Assam several times for various reasons, neither the Prime Minister nor Union Home Minister Amit Shah had visited the state even once during the recent devastating flood situation.
On the issue of illegal immigration in Assam, Khaleque claimed that the maximum number of barbed-wire fences along the international border had been erected during the tenure of Congress governments. He alleged that the BJP government must now acknowledge its failure as the border remains vulnerable.
He said the Congress fully supports the deportation of foreigners from Assam but would never support the harassment of Indian citizens in the name of identifying foreigners.
Khaleque also alleged that the Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, had violated the principles, norms and spirit of alliance politics. He appealed to Gogoi to strengthen the alliance, saying that if he was genuinely opposed to the BJP and AIUDF, he should “put it to an acid test” before it was too late.
