West Karbi Anglong to get 220/33 KV sub-station at Baithalangso

Hills Live News,Diphu Sept 24: In a major boost to power infrastructure in West Karbi Anglong, Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL) has proposed relocating a planned 220/33 kV Grid Sub-Station to Baithalangso, West Karbi Anglong.The move follows a request from Deputy Speaker Dr. Habey Teron, who wrote to AEGCL Managing Director highlighting frequent low voltage, poor power quality and interruptions in the district due to long 33 KV transmission lines from Sankardev Nagar of Hojai district.
Dr. Teron had urged for a 132/33 kV sub-station at Hamren or Baithalangso. The matter was also discussed in a District Electricity Committee meeting held on 24 June 2025 under the chairmanship of the Diphu (ST) MP Amarsing Tisso.
Responding to the D.O. in a letter dated 30 July 2026, AEGCL stated that grid augmentation for the region is already part of the CEA Resource Adequacy Plan for 2034-35.
Originally planned as a 220/33 kV sub-station at Modertoli (near Kampur), the project is now proposed to be shifted to Baithalangso.
Dr. Teron said Baithalangso’s central location between Kampur and Hamren will better serve both load centres, improve voltage regulation, reduce losses and support future growth in the remote district.
Allegations of MDM irregularities and mismanagement rock PM Shri School in West K A

Hills Live News, Diphu Sept 24: Severe dissatisfaction has gripped the local community over alleged mismanagement and irregularities at PM Shri Adarsh Rashtra Bhasha Hindi High School in Nawaibil, West Karbi Anglong (under Socheng Education Block of Kheroni Police Station jurisdiction).
Residents and parents have alleged that Mid Day Meal (MDM) is not being prepared regularly as per the daily menu prescribed by the Education Department.
According to the complainants, food is cooked for students only when senior Education Department officers visit the school, with efforts made to present a proper picture during such inspections. Additional grievances include poor toilet cleanliness and a muddy school compound.
Anger has also been directed at the former president of the School Management Development Committee (SMDC), Chhotelal Chauhan, an Assistant Professor at Kapili College, West Karbi Anglong. A meeting was convened to dissolve the previous SMDC in light of the allegations.
Locals claimed that Chauhan left the meeting while discussions on financial calculations and MDM register were underway.
Residents have lodged a complaint at the Mailoo Police Out Post under Kheroni Police Station against the former president and others.
The veracity of the allegations will be determined only after a thorough investigation.
The formation of a new SMDC has further triggered unrest on the school premises. Locals and parents have accused the previous committee of attempting to reconstitute the new body according to its own preferences. They are demanding the appointment of a capable former teacher Ashok Kumar Singh as SMDC’s president instead. Reports also mention allegations of altercations amid the heated atmosphere.
Parents, students, guardians and local residents have highlighted multiple longstanding problems at the school, including irregular MDM provision, unusable toilets, shortage of teachers and overall poor management under the previous committee.
